High Pitched Ringing in My Ears

I have gathered a lot of questions and answers upon reading so much about “high pitched ringing in my ears” in the web. Here they are.

• What is this high pitched ringing in my ears?
It’s called tinnitus. That’s the medical term.

• Is tinnitus only heard as high pitched ringing alone?
No. A lot of people out there with tinnitus hear a variety of noises and each person may hear his or her tinnitus differently from others. Tinnitus can be heard as low humming, high ringing, pure monotone shrill or a multi-tone pitch, a high musical note played constantly, or it can be a pure noise with no tonal quality at all, roaring sound, buzzing, hissing, and sometimes clicking noises. One person’s encounter with tinnitus can be different from somebody else’s.

• What are the causes of this troublesome condition?
According to experts, there are a lot of factors that cause ringing ears. The high pitched ringing in my ears was caused by frequent exposure to loud noises. I used to work in a milling station and I never knew machinery-generated noise could damage my hearing. Now, I know better. Loud noise is a common cause of tinnitus. Other causes include head injury, ear infection, blood circulation problems, age-related causes, side effects of medication, and even poor diet.

• Why is it that it seems to occur at night?
This one must be noted. During daytime, we get busy and we come about our activities so we don’t quite notice tinnitus. However, at night when it gets quiet, tinnitus becomes more noticeable. There are many tinnitus victims that have trouble sleeping over it.

• Is there anything that can be done to sleep better at night?
Yes. Play a low music at night. This should aid in covering the sound of tinnitus. Ticking clocks and radio tuned at a blank frequency do the trick too.

• It seems the ringing gets louder when I’m angry?
I used to ask the same question before. According to specialists, stress causes you to hear your tinnitus more. Anger, anxiety, and fatigue stress you out; and stress is an aggravating factor. Meaning, you hear your tinnitus seem to get louder whenever you’re tired, mad, or worried.

• Is there a cure?
There’s no cure for tinnitus. The best way to deal with it is to accept it. Doctors would prescribe ear maskers like the one use sometimes. One can get benefit too from meditation and yoga to help you calm the nerves. Alternative medicines also help a lot of patients too.

Recently, I have sought the ways to ignore the high pitched ringing in my ear. It’s always there but I’m living with it and I’m still fine like I always am.
